As IP-based video production evolves quickly, many of us are eyeing 4K cameras as the go-to standard. But do you really need one?
For many video production setups, 4K is often more of a “nice-to-have” than a necessity. Yes, 4K provides crisper resolution and offers more flexibility for post-production zooming and cropping. However, it’s also demanding on the average computer system—4K files require more storage, heavier processing, and greater bandwidth, which can lead to increased costs and bottlenecks, especially in IP workflows where smooth transmission is essential.
In fact, for live streaming, social media, or corporate video work, 1080p often delivers a more than adequate experience at a fraction of the required resources. Plus, with new AI-driven upscaling tools, upscaling HD to 4K has never been more feasible.
Here’s my advice: assess your goals. If your viewers are watching on smaller screens or if bandwidth is limited, 1080p might be the smarter choice. But if cinematic quality and large displays are your aim, 4K could be worth it.
